Perfect Pitch Training

(for 3-5 yo children only)

Absolute pitch (AP), often called perfect pitch, is the ability to identify or re-create a given musical note without the benefit of a reference tone. This is like a "super power" for musicians, and very few people have this ability even at music schools (0.01% in general population, 5%> at U.S. music schools, 20%> at Japanese music schools.)

At our studio, 5 yo and younger beginners are strongly encouraged to start daily training sessions at home (2-3 minute, 2 sessions per day ) to attain perfect pitch using Eguchi method I trained with when I was three years-old to attain my perfect pitch. This is an ability most children can attain as long as they start daily exercise before they turn 6 year-old and it usually becomes completely unattainable after 6 and a half years-old.

However, ear training is equally important for 6 yo and older student to develop good relative pitch and sensitivity for different intervals and chords. Especially if your child starts preparing for RCM, ear training will be an important part of your child's piano lessons.
